Our Styles of Play

Messy Play

Messy play is a much-loved and important part of early childhood learning at Sunflowers. It provides children with the opportunity to explore, create, and discover in a fun and hands-on way.

Through messy play, children develop important skills such as hand-eye coordination by pouring, mixing, scooping, and experimenting with different materials. It also supports creativity, curiosity, and independent decision-making, as children are free to explore without pressure or a set outcome.

There is no right or wrong way to take part in messy play. Children are encouraged to use their senses, follow their interests, and make their own discoveries at their own pace. Whether it’s exploring textures, combining materials, or simply enjoying the experience, messy play helps build confidence, concentration, and a love of learning.

In the Moment Planning

Young children are naturally curious and eager to learn, explore, and ask questions. At Sunflowers, we support this by creating an environment where children can lead their own play and follow their interests in the moment.

Our practitioners carefully observe children as they play, looking for opportunities to support and extend their learning. When a child shows interest in something, this becomes a valuable “teachable moment” that can be built upon in a meaningful and engaging way.

For example, children are free to choose from a range of activities and areas within the setting, rather than being directed to a specific task. Practitioners join children in their play by showing genuine interest, asking questions, and encouraging exploration. This child-led approach helps create rich learning experiences that feel natural, enjoyable, and relevant to each child.
