SUNFLOWERS DAY NURSERIES
Illness and Wellbeing
Your child’s health and wellbeing are very important to us. We work closely with parents to ensure children are happy, safe, and well enough to enjoy their time at nursery.
If you feel like your child needs Calpol
If your child is unwell, it is important that they stay at home to rest and recover.
Children should not be given Calpol (or other fever-reducing medication) before attending nursery, as this can mask symptoms and make it harder to identify if they are unwell. If a child requires Calpol (other than for teething) to get through the day, they are not well enough to attend and may be sent home.
If your child is teething and may need Calpol during the day, please speak to a member of the team and complete a medicine form. We will always try other ways to comfort your child first, using Calpol only as a last resort. If we feel your child is too uncomfortable, we may ask for them to be collected.
When Children Should Stay at Home?
To keep all children safe and well, we ask that children do not attend nursery if they are unwell. This includes (but is not limited to):
-
A temperature of 38°C or above
-
Any contagious illness that could be passed to others
-
Being generally unwell or not able to take part in the day
Children have the right to play in a healthy and safe environment. If a child becomes unwell during the day, we will contact parents and may ask for them to be collected. We may also contact you if your child seems unusually tired, emotional, or not themselves.
We will keep parents informed about any illnesses within the nursery by displaying notices at the entrance.
If your child is sent home unwell, they must stay off nursery for at least 24 hours (depending on symptoms and guidance). If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to return, please contact our management team.
Accidents and Injuries
Our team is fully first aid trained and will provide care if your child has an accident.
-
All accidents will be recorded, and parents will be asked to sign an accident form at collection
-
For head bumps or injuries, we will contact you during the day
-
In the event of a more serious accident requiring hospital treatment, we will make every effort to contact you. A member of staff will accompany your child and stay with them until you arrive
If your child has an injury at home, please let us know at drop-off so we can complete a pre-existing injury form and monitor them during the day. For more serious injuries or medical conditions, we ask that you contact us in advance so we can prepare and support your child safely.
Exclusion for common diseases and illness’ that occur in nursery settings
If your child is taking antibiotics or prescribed medication, please speak to the nursery team for guidance on when they can return.
We also have additional policies for less common illnesses; please refer to the nursery handbook or speak to a member of the team for more information.
