The Early Years Foundation Stage Sunflowers Day Nurseries works in accordance with the 'Early Years Foundation Framework' which forms that basis of the curriculum for children from birth to 5 years. This is a statutory requirement that all nurseries, preschools, childminders and reception classes must follow. Aligning ourselves with the EYFS helps the nursery set the relevant standard of learning, development and care, as well as supporting an integrated approach to early learning and care within the Nursery Setting. The EYFS is made up of four specific themes: Our Sunflowers practitioners carefully plan learning and activities through 7 areas of learning ensuring that planning is unique and individual to each child to meet their individual needs. The 7 areas of learning are split in to three ‘Prime’ areas of learning and four ‘Specific’ areas of learning. The prime areas are important because they lay the foundations for children’s success in all areas of learning and of life: • Communication and Language • Personal, Social and Emotional • Physical As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. The specific areas provide the range of experiences and opportunities for children to broaden their knowledge and skills: • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the World • Expressive Art and Design

Growing and Developing At Sunflowers Day Nursery, we know that movement and physical activity are a vital part of your child’s development. Through play, exploration, and everyday activities, children build the skills they need to grow stronger, more confident, and more independent. We provide a range of opportunities for children to develop both their fine and gross motor skills in a fun and engaging way, helping them to enjoy being active while supporting their overall wellbeing. Physical Development Physical development is an important part of your child’s growth. It helps children build strength, coordination, and confidence, allowing them to explore the world around them and take part in everyday activities. There are two main areas of physical development: Fine motor skills – using smaller muscles (hands, fingers, face) Gross motor skills – using larger muscles (arms, legs, whole body) Both are equally important and work closely together as your child grows. Why Physical Development Matters Supporting your child’s physical development helps them to: Build strong muscles and healthy bones Improve balance and coordination Develop important movement skills Sleep better Build confidence and independence Develop healthy habits through active play, sport, and movement Support overall wellbeing and emotional health Fine Motor Skills Fine motor skills involve small, precise movements using the hands, fingers, and facial muscles. These skills are essential for everyday tasks such as: Eating and using cutlery Writing and drawing Getting dressed Holding and manipulating objects As children develop these skills, they become more independent and confident in completing daily activities. Gross Motor Skills Gross motor skills involve larger movements using the whole body. These include activities such as: Running, jumping, and climbing Balancing and coordinating movements Playing active games Developing gross motor skills helps children become stronger, more agile, and more confident in their movements. It also supports social development, as children often use these skills when playing with others. Strong gross motor skills also support the development of fine motor skills, so both areas are closely linked. How We Support Physical Development at Sunflowers At Sunflowers Day Nursery, we support children’s physical development through a range of engaging and age-appropriate activities. Children are encouraged to take part in daily free play, where they can choose activities that interest them. Our environment is carefully planned to support both fine and gross motor development. For fine motor skills, we provide activities such as “finger gym” and sensory trays, helping children practise movements like gripping, pouring, and manipulating small objects. These activities are often linked to current topics or children’s interests. For gross motor development, children have opportunities for active play that supports movement, coordination, and confidence. We understand that every child develops at their own pace. Some children may need more time and support, and we provide encouragement, patience, and opportunities to help them progress. If there are any concerns about a child’s development, we encourage both staff and parents to speak with our SENCo so we can work together to provide the right support.

Funding and Assistance Support for Parents At Sunflowers Day Nursery, we are pleased to offer funded childcare for eligible working families with children aged from 9 months and above. We understand that childcare funding can feel confusing, so this section explains how it works and what to expect. What information are you looking for: Government Funding Other Childcare Cost Help Government Funding Government Funded Childcare What Funding Is Available? Eligible families may receive: 15 hours funded childcare, or 30 hours funded childcare This funding is provided by the government for 38 weeks of the year (term time). You can choose to: Use it term time only, or Stretch it across the year, using fewer hours per week over more weeks Funding starts from the term after your child becomes eligible, not immediately when you receive your code. *Please refer to the government website for fully updated and more detailed information* For more information please follow this link to the Governments Website: Government Infomation Why is it Funded not Free? You may have seen government-funded childcare described as “free hours.” While this funding is a great support for families, it is important to understand what it does, and does not, cover. Government funding is designed to contribute towards the cost of basic childcare provision only. It does not cover the full cost of delivering the high-quality care, learning experiences, resources, and meals that nurseries provide each day. At Sunflowers Day Nursery, we are committed to offering a rich, engaging, and nurturing environment where children can learn, explore, and thrive. To maintain this level of care and ensure every child has access to the same high-quality experiences, there are additional costs that sit alongside the funded hours. We believe in being open and transparent about this, so parents fully understand how funding works and what is included in their child’s nursery experience. To help explain this further, we have included a short video created by external early years professionals: Please watch this 3-minute video for a clearer understanding of why additional charges are necessary alongside funded hours. What Does “Funded” Mean? Government funding covers the cost of childcare hours only. It does not include: Meals Additional hours (wraparound care) Extra resources or experiences Your monthly invoice will clearly show: Funded hours Any additional hours Meals Enhanced provision Invoices are sent monthly and reflect your actual bookings. What Is Enhanced Provision? At Sunflowers, we go beyond the basic requirements to provide a rich, engaging, and high-quality experience for every child. This includes: Local Outings Local walks (duck feeding, exploring nature, parks, football pitches, local community shops, library & rhyme time sessions) Picnic trips with provided ice creams Others as arranged These extras are not covered by government funding, which is why an enhanced provision cost is included. This ensures all children, regardless of how they attend, receive the same high-quality experience. Eligibility for Funding To find out if you are elligable please follow the link *Please refer to the government website for fully updated and more detailed information* Government Infomation Applying for Funding To receive your funded hours: Apply online through the government website Receive your 16-digit funding code Provide this code to the nursery and complete the required paperwork Important: You must renew your code every 3 months If your code expires, funding cannot be claimed for that term If using multiple nurseries, you must declare this *Please refer to the government website for fully updated and more detailed information* Using Your Funded Hours At Sunflowers: Funding is used in morning/ afternoon sessions (5 hours) or full day (10 hours) If funding does not fully cover a session, the remaining time is chargeable Our team will help you choose the best option for your family.
